OpenAI is releasing a new generation of its technology called GPT-6 that the company is positioning as a key milestone in its decade-long push to build so-called artificial general intelligence.

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, disclosing that the new flagship model has crossed the “Critical” threshold for cybersecurity risk under its Preparedness Framework, a classification the company said triggers additional deployment restrictions.

OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra marks the arrival of AGI, even as its cybersecurity abilities and harder-to-monitor reasoning raise new safety concerns.

"At this level of capability, safety has to become our top priority," OpenAI President Greg Brockman told reporters on a call about the release of GPT-6, also known as Astra.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang wrote in a blog post Thursday that more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face to share more than 3 million models, 500,000 data sets and 1 million applications.

Nvidia, a semiconductor giant, will buy Hugging Face for $13bn. The platform hosts millions of mostly open AI models, which users can download and modify. Last year Hugging Face turned down $500m (at a $7bn valuation) from the chipmaker because it wanted to maintain its independence.

The acquisition will give Nvidia access to “one of the most important parcels of real estate in the AI market” and promote open-source technology.
